What is a deep work
timer and why it’s useful

Inspired by Cal Newport’s book Deep Work, the Deep Work Timer helps you stay focused by designating specific time blocks to focused work. These sessions should be uninterrupted times devoted to challenging tasks that deserve your full attention, be it coding, writing, or studying.

Simply set the length of your session, start the timer, and let it run quietly in the background. When your time is up, you’ll get a gentle nudge to take a break.

How to use the deep work timer

To use the Deep Work Timer, set your desired session length (typically 90, 120, or 180 minutes), start the timer, and commit to working without interruption. This tool works well with popular productivity frameworks like the:

📅 Time Blocking (Cal Newport)
Block 90–180 minutes for deep work.

🟦 Eisenhower Matrix
Use the timer when tackling your tasks from the "important/not urgent" quadrant. This kind of strategic work often requires deep focus (90-180 minutes).

✅ Most Important Task (MIT) Method
Start your day with a deep work session focused on your single most important task. Allocate 60–120 minutes of uninterrupted time to make meaningful progress before switching to anything else.

🍅 Pomodoro Technique (Extended Format)
Instead of short 25-minute sprints, use the Deep Work Timer for 90-minute “long Pomodoros” with a single break in between.

Ideally, align these sessions with your peak energy times of day. Over time, consistent use of the timer improves attention span and work output.

What is Morgen

Morgen is your all-in-one hub for unifying calendars, tasks, and scheduling.

It syncs with leading task management tools (Notion, ClickUp, Linear, and Todoist) to time block tasks directly into your calendar. Either time block manually or with the AI Planner to suggest a schedule based on Morgen’s Priority Factor (prioritizes tasks based on importance, due dates, capacity, and more).

The AI Planner creates realistic, energy-aware schedules by splitting long tasks in multiple work sessions, scheduling breaks, adjusting for conflicts, and keeping your day balanced and on track.

By using Frames, you can template your week based on task categories, sources, tags, or projects. You can guide the AI Planner to theme your days (work, personal, side hustle, etc.), schedule tasks in the blocks of time devoted to deep work, and ensure nothing slips through the cracks.
